2023 CrossFit Petram Open: Week 1 Details

It’s finally here, crew. The 2023 Open has arrived! At CrossFit Petram, this is our favorite time of year simply because of the community, the workouts, and of course, the fun we have with one another! The CrossFit Open gives each one of us an opportunity to set goals, learn about ourselves and celebrate what we are capable of as athletes, no matter the stage of life we are in. I’m bringing you everything you will need to know for Week 1 of the Open and our in-house competition. See below for the goodness!

Theme: CrossFit Petram is WILD about the Open!

During Week 1, we are having ourselves a good ol’fashion COLOR WARS! Show off your team colors to class or Friday Night Lights so that we can see all of our teams out in full force! If you ordered an Open shirt from the online store, they will be available for pickup later today at the gym. Pictures make everything better, so be sure to grab a picture with teammates or friends and share them with us!

Community Give Back Partner and Contest: Faithful Friends Animal Society

This week, we will be rallying to support Faithful Friends Animal Society of Delaware. Faithful Friends works to end animal neglect, abuse, and the killing of pets in Delaware by providing animal-related welfare and social services. As a team, you will work to collect donation items for the shelter! Not sure what to donate? View this list here. There will be a collection bin for each team at the gym, and we will collect items between Tuesday, February 14 through Sunday, February 19.

Logistics: Each week, CrossFit Headquarters will release a workout on Thursday evening. This year, we will find out what 23.1 is on Thursday, February 16. At CrossFit Petram, we complete the workout on the following Friday. The Open workout will be done during all class times, and at Friday Night Lights, so no matter when you show up, you can expect to see the weekly Open workout.

Class Flow: On Fridays, class times remain the same in the AM and at noon, but our last class before FNL is 3:30. We will be open for 3:30 PM class and then closing until we re-open the gym for Friday Night Lights. During class, you can expect a warm up and then two heats of athletes working out. Please know that as coaches who have yet to complete the workout (just like you all), we are going to do our best to brief you and give you strategies…but remember - it’s just exercise. Go out there and have fun!

Friday Night Lights: The doors for Friday Night Lights open at 6:00 PM. The workout brief with movement standards will begin approximately at 6:10 PM, with heat 1 kicking off at 6:30 PM. In order to workout at Friday Night Lights, it is important that you sign up using our Wodify app (you can actually reserve your spot right now in the app). We will use this sign up list to create random heats for Friday night. This information will also be shared in the members page if you are a part of our Facebook community. We respectfully ask that you do not request a certain heat, or to workout with certain people, as the heats are dependent upon the released workout. If you have a unique circumstance and need an adjustment, please reach out and we will do our best to accommodate you. If you completed the workout earlier in the day, don’t worry! You can still show up to Friday Night Lights to cheer for other members! In addition, we will have some wild snacks for members to enjoy. This event is BYOB.

Weekly Points: You’ve seen this sprinkled throughout the information, but just to clarify, there are lots of different ways to earn points across the week for you squad:

  • 1 point for completing the workout (please enter your score in Wodify)

  • 1 point for attending Friday Night Lights

  • 1 point for participating in the weekly theme

  • Team points will be awarded for each community give back contest

Every year, I tell members the same message - we are so used to being able to see our workouts ahead of time that oftentimes, members can feel anxious or nervous about what is to come. But remember - this is what we do everyday! It’s just exercise! Honor how far you’ve come, take the lessons that each workout will bring you, and use those to set some goals moving forward.
